FESPA has found 53% of environmental claims are vague or misleading, having launched a new sustainability guide aimed at helping print businesses avoid greenwashing.
The guide, Understanding and Avoiding Greenwash, provides practical advice on making clear, accurate and evidence-based sustainability claims. It comes as pressure grows from both regulators and customers for greater transparency around environmental impact.
Research highlighted the above figure, while 40% lack supporting evidence. It also warns that even technically true claims can be considered deceptive if they omit key information.
FESPA says the print sector faces particular risks when using terms such as “eco-friendly” or “biodegradable” without proper substantiation.
The guide encourages businesses to adopt a full lifecycle approach, considering the environmental impact of products from production through to disposal.
With new UK and EU regulations on the horizon, FESPA says companies must ensure claims are clear, verifiable and supported by data to avoid reputational and legal risks.
