Long live the King!

King Charles III will be crowned on Saturday, May 6 at Westminster Abbey. Garment and promotional product decorators up and down the country have been busy creating and designing merchandise and artwork to celebrate the momentous occasion. Here is just a small showcase of the huge amount of creativity that exists within the industry.

Bottom section of the final design

This beautiful piece of embroidery was digitised using Wilcom EmbroideryStudio e4 Designing by Lisa Craddock at Barudan UK specifically for Printwear & Promotion LIVE! in February.

It was digitised to show the high performance and stitch quality of the Barudan embroidery machines. Embroidered on the BEKY-S1508CII – eight-head, speed of 1,100 stitches per minute, taking just under four hours to complete.

The final design

It features a total of 177,500 stitches and uses 15 shades of Madeira Classic thread.

Digitised in sections for the best registration results, and with P&P LIVE! visitors in mind, starting with the bottom sections first, and working upwards. This means as the embroidery is taking shape, the completed sections were visible to passers-by, while the machine was busy embroidering sections above.

The full selection of merchandise

The team at British Made Gifts headed by Lance Dentith have been busy making a varied selection of quirky promotional gifts for the coronation. Products range from tea towels to door banners to cushions.

The range has proven popular with customers, and the team has also received bulk enquiries and sales from a BBC show, Heathrow Airport and several local councils all wanting to be suitably decorated for the occasion.

Coronation tea towel

Each product was carefully and thoughtfully designed in-house by a team of skilled designers. The designs were digitally printed using a fleet of DGI Poseidon high-speed sublimation printers, utilising industrial Kyocera print heads and DGI inks, as supplied by Sabur Digital.

The designs were then sublimated via Hunt & Moscrop heat transfer calendars across British Made Gift’s fabric range before finishing with laser cutting.

To celebrate the coronation of King Charles III, David Sharp has created a suite of giveaway designs which can be downloaded from its website for free.

The team are encouraging embroiderers to get involved in this historic moment, with embroidery designs to produce something memorable for such a prestigious event.

The design to the left was digitised in house by David Sharp’s very own Jamie Hood, using Wilcom EmbroideryStudio e4 Designing and stitched on the Melco EMT16X from Amaya, with Madeira Classic 40 rayon thread and EZEE 42g backing.

There are three options available for download; a small design measuring 97mm and 19,431 stitches, and two large designs, with different colour options, from 48,659 to 65,845 stitches, depending on the option chosen.

If you choose to download a design, the team have asked that when finished designs are posted online that the hashtag #davidsharpemb is used so they can see all the beautiful things that have been created.

Kingly’s coronation themed socks

How cool would it be to walk on historic medieval flooring, at the exact spot where King Charles III was crowned inside Westminster Abbey?

From May 15 to July 29 visitors will be able to walk across the famous Cosmati pavement, as long as they wear a pair of socks! The intricate mosaic floor of marble, stone, glass and metal was commissioned by Henry III and completed in 1268.

Kingly has created series of coronation themed socks to mark the occasion. These earth-friendly sustainable socks were knitted using state-of-the-art Busi Giovanni sock knitting machines, with Kingly being one of only 52 producers certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard. Kingly also takes pride in creating its neon socks (pictured) according to the Global Recycled Standard (GRS). Kingly’s socks’ environmental impact is measured using the BCome’s sustainability platform, and are considered to be among the most earth-friendly textile products on the planet.

They are composed of 80% combed cotton for comfort, 17% polyamide for strength, 3% elastane for stretch. The composition can change according to the type of sock to be produced, for example dress or sports socks. Optional organic GOTS and upcycled cotton socks also available. Kingly’s socks are packed as a pair with a recycled tag and an individual compostable bag.

The King’s Cypher

In celebration of the King’s upcoming coronation Maria Potter, business development manager at Madeira UK has produced this stunning 50,000 stitch embroidery of His Majesty the King’s Cypher. To celebrate such a special occasion, it’s worth using special threads so for this design Maria used a selection of threads from the FS 40 and CR 40 metallic ranges and the white details on the crown were embroidered with Classic rayon thread and created with the star function, a stitch feature in the Wilcom EmbroideryStudio e4.5 Designing software.

The lettering is stitched in FS 40 metallic thread in colour Gold 4 using a tatami fill stitch. These threads are specially constructed for smooth running and contain pure silver to add an extra element of luxury. The CR 40 thread range includes coloured metallics so worked perfectly for the jewels set within the crown. The fine satin stitch boarder around the initials is embroidered in CR 40 thread in colour 4298 Fire Opal. Although the stitch width of 0.8mm is small for metallic thread Maria said it ran beautifully at high speed on the machine, her top tip here is to always use new needles when working with metallic embroidery threads. A size 75/11 needle was selected for the 40-weight thread with a sharp point for embroidering on to velvet. The fabric was stabilised with a 50g tear away backing and a water-soluble topping was used to prevent the stitches from sinking into the pile of the velvet. Magnetic frames are always a good option to avoid hoop marks particularly for fabrics such as velvet which can be prone to marks.

Printing on the GTX Pro

In build up to the King’s coronation, MHM Direct GB has decided to print a special T shirt to mark this historic occasion.

The final print

The team used the Brother GTX Pro direct to garment printer and the artwork was provided by Product Source Group in Manchester.

The size of this print is 12x16in. The print took an impressive 1 minute 35 seconds to print at 1200dpi. Stunning colour vibrancy and wash fastness is achieved using Brother’s Innobella inks, that are Oeko-Tex approved and GOTS 6 certified.
