Canon launches TR-A100 raman analyser to boost plastic recycling

Canon has announced the EMEA launch of its new TR-A100 Raman plastic analyser, designed to tackle one of recycling’s most persistent challenges: the accurate identification of black plastics.

Effective recycling depends on high material purity, particularly when separating plastics such as ABS and polypropylene (PP). However, traditional near-infrared spectroscopy struggles to detect black plastics – widely used in electronics and automotive upholstery – due to their light-absorbing properties. This limitation has long restricted the recovery of valuable materials.

The TR-A100 overcomes this barrier using an advanced laser scanning method that oscillates the laser’s irradiation position, reducing energy density and preventing heat damage during analysis. By tailoring measurement times, the analyser can accurately identify even low-signal black plastics and determine the proportion of target materials within a sample.

Peter Bragg, Canon EMEA’s Sustainability & Government Affairs Director, said:  “The inability to efficiently sort black plastics has been a significant barrier to achieving a truly circular economy within EMEA.

“Canon has been prioritising extending the lifecycle of materials, avoiding unnecessary waste and embracing circularity.

“Our new TR-A100 Raman plastic analyser directly helps us achieve this by offering unprecedented efficiency and speed, drastically improving recycling purity.

“This breakthrough unlocks vast quantities of previously unrecyclable materials and significantly accelerates our collective journey towards a more sustainable future by strengthening our circularity efforts across Europe.”

By enabling recycling plants to optimise sorting and collection processes, the TR-A100 is set to significantly increase recycled material volumes while reinforcing Canon’s growing presence in advanced material recovery systems.
