Getting to grips with DTF

Nick White, pro graphics business manager, Epson (UK), explores how direct to garment printers can capitalise on the growing direct to film market by using their existing hardware.

The direct to film (DTF) market has grown significantly in the past year buoyed by future forward operations that can see the opportunities presented by the ability to access additional revenue streams with this easy to adopt technology.

For many their existing direct to garment (DTG) hardware can be made DTF ready with just a simple driver change. With the new driver the systems can quickly, efficiently, and affordably print directly onto film. The printed designs can then be applied to textiles using a heat press. They can also be stored and applied later as and when required.

Here are some key questions to ask if you are interested in expanding in to DTF:

How do you print DTF?

After installing the software and drivers, place the transfer paper top centre of the T shirt platen – the matt side should be facing up. Marking the centre of the platen can help ensure greater accuracy. Open the chosen artwork, mirror it, and print the first layer of colour. Then print the white ink. Dust with print adhesive powder checking every part of the design is covered (this process should be completed in a well-ventilated space). Place the transfer film under a heat press or in a heat oven until the texture of the powder looks smoother. The design can then be applied with the appropriate heat press using the correct settings or stored for later used. After the film feels cool to touch gently peel it away. Do not stop once the peel has started as this can damage the print.

Are separate DTG and DTF printers required?

No, with our driver for DTG printers there is no need to invest in a separate printer to be part of the DTF market. The free of charge upgrade unlocks DTF functions for customers buying DTG machines and wanting to get into DTF. It enables operations to enter the market in a responsive and cost-effective way.

It is possible to swap between DTG and DTF printing on one machine?

Yes, with an Epson machine and a DTF driver it is simple. It is not complicated and there is no requirement to switch out the ink.

What are the benefits of a printer that manages both?

The ability to say yes to everything. All services can be delivered without the need for additional investment. Just one, rather than two machines, is required – perfect for operations where space is at a premium.

Is there a need to flush inks before switching to DTF?

No. This is the biggest myth. All that is necessary is a different driver that prints the white ink last. There is no need to invest in separate printer to be part of the DTF market.

Why are DTF transfers a more productive choice for some orders than DTG or screen printing?

With DTF, multiple designs can be placed on one sheet of film. This decreases the time spent going through the printing process for multiple items as they only need to be printed once. They can then be separated and stored for use when needed. DTF transfers can also be applied to a broad range of items, including those that DTG or screen printing cannot manage.

How can you grow your DTF sales opportunities?

Explain to your existing customers what else you can offer them and regularly update them on all the services you deliver. Promote the wider range of applications now possible. The perceived wisdom is that attracting new customers costs 10 times more than communicating with your existing client base.

What new developments are being planned?

We expect to see improvements in the workflow print quality and durability all of which will create an increasingly attractive product.

Plug in and play DTF technology can be a quick addition to any portfolio of services. It is simple to introduce into any existing DTG workflow where it can begin making an immediate contribution to the bottom line. What could it do for yours?
