New recognitions for Gildan’s corporate social responsibility programme and initiatives

Gildan’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme has seen some recent developments take place during the last couple of months.

Firstly, from September 22 Gildan Activewear has been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World Index) for the second consecutive year, making it the only North American company in the textiles, apparel and luxury goods industry to be included. The DJSI World Index is among the most prestigious benchmarks for corporate sustainability worldwide.

Peter Iliopoulos, senior vice-president of Gildan’s public and corporate affairs said: “Being selected a second year running is a great testimony to the depth of our CSR program and initiatives, which is part and parcel of our business model and strategy.”

The Dow Jones Sustainability Indices are maintained collaboratively by S&P Dow Jones Indices and RobecoSAM. Following a best-in-class approach, the indices measure the performance of the world’s sustainability leaders. Only organisations that lead their industries based on the strict criteria of the indices are included in the ranking.

Mr Iliopoulos continued: “We are particularly proud this year to have achieved the highest score of all eight companies listed in the apparel industry in the categories of corporate governance, risk and crisis management and occupational health and safety, as well as the top percentile ranking in the collective social dimension categories.”

During 2013 Gildan enjoyed several key environmental accomplishments, including the achievement of both greenhouse gas emissions and waste reduction goals a full two years ahead of schedule. Since 2010, Gildan has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 32%, and decreased the amount of waste sent to landfill by 25%. Also, in 2013, 52% of its total energy was met by using renewable resources, compared to just 36% in 2012.

Secondly, Gildan’s manager of sustainability Julie Cournoyer, who plays an important role in the development and implementation of Gildan’s sustainability strategy, was one of 10 people to receive an Emerging Leaders award as part of the 2015 Clean50 Awards.

These individual awards are organised annually by Delta Management Group in order to recognise 50 people, from 16 different categories, who have made a significant contribution to the cause of sustainability and clean capitalism in Canada over the past two years.
