New research from MyWorkwear suggests that while UK businesses increasingly recognise the importance of sustainability, many are struggling to turn ambition into meaningful action.
Released to coincide with World Environment Day, the survey of 100 senior decision-makers found that 78% believe sustainability is driven more by brand image than genuine action. Although 91% agreed that sustainability should be a priority for their organisation, only 69% said it is currently treated as one, while just 51% have measurable sustainability targets in place.
Rising costs were cited as a major obstacle, with 64% of respondents reporting that their focus on sustainability has declined over the past year. The cost of sustainable alternatives (63%), time constraints (41%), lack of knowledge (31%) and limited availability of sustainable options (29%) were also highlighted as barriers.
Despite these challenges, 59% of businesses said adopting more sustainable practices had resulted in cost savings.
James Worthington, co-owner of MyWorkwear, said: “While it’s encouraging to see most business leaders recognise the importance of sustainability, this research clearly shows there is still a significant gap between ambition and action.”
The study also highlighted opportunities for the workwear sector, with 55% of respondents considering sustainability when purchasing workwear and 71% saying they would choose sustainable garments if more options were readily available.
