Gildan donates to relief efforts for Canadian fire victims

More than 80,000 people were affected by the wildfire that ravaged Fort McMurray and Northern Alberta earlier this month and now Gildan has announced that it is donating a large collection of clothing to the evacuees.

The donation, which includes T shirts, underwear and socks and has a retail value of more than $400,000, is being made to the Edmonton Emergency Relief Services Society.

The EERSS has established the necessary infrastructure to receive the shipment and deliver the items to the people displaced by the devastating forest fires.

Glenn Chamandy, president and CEO of Gildan, said: “Our thoughts are with the residents of Fort McMurray and Northern Alberta who have been forced to flee their homes, leaving everything of value behind.

“One of the pillars of the our company’s corporate social responsibility program, Genuine Gildan, is to be supportive of the communities where we operate, and as such we are pleased to be able to assist Canadians who find themselves in this difficult situation.”

In addition, under the company’s Gildan Gives program, Gildan has announced that it will match monetary donations made by any of its 600 Canadian employees towards the relief efforts.

Mr Chamandy added: “It is our hope that our efforts will assist the Fort McMurray residents displaced by the fires in the process of getting their lives back to normal.”

The wildfire started on May 1 and on May 3 it swept through Fort McMurray destroying 2,400 homes. The burned area totalled 702,310 acres and it is thought that it will take months to contain and extinguish the fire entirely.
