Epson launches direct to shape printing system

Epson has launched CONTOURJET, a new direct to shape printing system designed to print directly onto complex 3D objects.

The system combines Epson’s S800 PrecisionCore print head technology with a high-precision industrial six-axis robot, enabling accurate printing onto curved and uneven surfaces. Applications include sporting goods, automotive parts and industrial items, with the system aimed at high-mix, low-volume production and personalisation.

CONTOURJET supports up to five ink colours, including white, with clear ink (varnish) also available to create a range of decorative effects, from base-layer printing through to textured finishes. The system operates at a resolution of 600x600dpi.

Epson said the technology can help reduce manual processes and manufacturing space by digitising conventional analogue printing methods. Inkjet printing also enables material to be applied only where required, helping to reduce waste and material usage.

Kan Igarashi, director of IJS Europe at Epson Deutschland GmbH, said: “Epson continues to create new inkjet applications that go beyond the boundaries of flat-surface printing by combining PrecisionCore print heads with robotics technology.”

The system also features precision trajectory control and image processing for curved surfaces, alongside independent lifting mechanisms for flexible printing angles.
